Don't Drink the Water!
Imagine you are outside all afternoon. It's 90º out and you are sweating like a Popsicle in Texas. As you get close to the house what are you thinking about? You probably see a tall glass packed with ice. Beads of water slipping down the sides, and cold, clean, pure water filled to the brim. Can you taste it already?
Now imagine how your dog feels. He's wearing a fur coat, and believe it or not he can't even sweat to cool off! Now think about the water bowl you've set out for him. Would you want to dink that stuff? Ask any vet and he will tell you how important it is for your dog to have clean, cool water. Especially during the hot summer months.
What's wrong with a water bowl?
1.) The water goes rancid. This is a perfect place for harmful bacteria to grow. It could be dangerous for us to drink water like this - it can be dangerous for your dog too. Have you ever seen that slime inside your pets bowl? Yeah, that's bacteria and algae!
2.) A water bowl is unnatural for a dog. If you could follow a pack of wolves running through the Western planes or in the mountains do you think you would find them stopping at the near by mud puddle for water? No way! They would find a flowing brook, or stream. It's a natural instinct for dogs to find and drink running water. This is there only way of knowing the water is fresh and pure.
3.) The water gets hot. Simple fact, things in a hot place get hot! Now, what sounds better on a blazing hot day.. a beautiful glass of ice cold water, or a cup of hot tea?
4.) It can run out! This is probably the most dangerous problem of all. I've heard too many stories of people who let their pet outside on a hot day and didn't provide enough water... none of the stories end well. Too many loved pets are lost to heat each summer; don't let yours be one of them.
