Fountain Tips

The "Original" Doggie Fountain
WWW.MetalPlasMart.Com
Made in the U.S.A.

Hints,Tips and Cautions

1.) Keep garden hose connection as short as possible. A long hose setting in the direct sunlight will cause the water in the hose to become very warm/hot. However, we have found that white 2" PVC pipe will help insulate the hose if the hose must be in direct sunlight.

1a.) A long hose will also act as a pressure tank. 60 lbs. of spigot pressure will cause the hose to expand thereby causing a sudden burst of water when the paddle is depressed. Once the pressure is relieved, the water will return to it's normal height. ( keep the hose as short as possible, at least until your pet is used to the fountain. I've done test's with my dog on a long hose and the short burst of water doesn't bother him at all.)

2.)Before introducing the "Original" Doggie-Fountain to your pet, be sure to remove all air from the water line and fountain by holding down the paddle until all air is dispersed. Otherwise, a blast of air/water will shoot into your pets mouth/face.

3.)Keep pet from chewing on garden hose. Short stainless-steel braided hoses can be purchased at your local hardware store.

4.) Make sure to disconnect garden hose from house spigot when temperatures approach freezing. Severe damage will occur if pipes, hose or Doggie Fountain is allowed to freeze.

5.)When training puppy or older pet, install Doggie Fountain close to house or if pet is in caged area, install fountain close to fence. You will want to have your pet approach the fountain from the front so install "blinders" on both sides of the fountain. I used split firewood stacked up on both sides and installed the fountain up against his fenced enclosure.

5a.) We've since found that giving your pet treats while putting your pets paws on the fountain and holding him from behind helps the training process. Adjust the fountain to a low flow at first. About 1-2" of water height works well.

6.) Don't overwork your pet. 5-10 minute sessions work best.

7.) Run your pet around the house a few times or have your pet fetch a stick/ball until he is really thirsty. Have your pet approach the fountain. Push the paddle and when he approaches, let the paddle go. Do this a few times. Put his paw on the paddle until water flows and he drinks. Don't let him drink to much. Pull his paw off the paddle and repeat this scenario until he learns to use his new fountain. Pets are really thirsty first thing in the morning as they have not been watered all night. I found that to be a good time to train him. My 10 week old puppy learned to use his fountain in 3 days.

8.) Don't ever deprive your pet of water. Some pets will learn this system faster than others. However, try to hydrate your pet primarily from the fountain when possible. Your pet only wants to please you. Be patient.

9.) After your pet learns the system, feel free to remove "blinders" and install the fountain anywhere you like. He will know how to use his new fountain.( Keeping in mind to keep the hose short and out of direct sunlight)

10.) Using well-water will cause discoloration.

11.) Finger tighten only, the brass "nut" that holds the cover to the water valve. Over-tightening will strip the valve threads.

12.) The 1/2" hole in the base of the Doggie-Fountain can be used as a hold-down if necessary. Drive a piece of "all-thread", purchased at your local hardware store, into the ground leaving about 3/4" sticking above ground level. Add flat washer and nut to all-thread to keep fountain in place. **Caution** Check with your local phone company, electric company, gas company, and other utility operators before "driving" anything into the ground. They will perform a free ground check to make sure you don't hit any of their lines.

13.) If the spring tension is to much for your pet, try removing one of the stainless-steel springs until your pet is more confident with his fountain. Also, you can go to your local Ace Hardware store and try a different set of springs. Their part number is: C-133 and they are made by Century Spring. The dimensions are 7/16" x 2-1/2" x .047 However, they are not stainless but are plated. Once your dog learns to use his new fountain, we recommend using the stainless-steel springs.

Congratulations!
